St. Matthias feeds the hungry and my spirit!

Welcome to our web site! St. Matthias is located in the Uptown neighborhood of Whittier, a block from Whittier College. We are part of the Episcopal Church in the USA, and therefore a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion.

Our Parish Identity Statement

St Matthias is a welcoming Christian community of the Episcopal Church that stresses

 ·       Eucharistic centered worship with skilled music

·       Education for all ages

·       Pastoral care to its members

·       Local outreach to the needy

·       Ministry of all Christians

·       Reflecting God’s diversity in creation in our membership

We sumarize our Identity Statement by saying

"St. Matthias feeds the hungry and my spirit"

We are an very active congregation seeking to be the loving hands of Christ to all who we encounter.

Therefore we have an active worship life, centered on celebrating together the Holy Eucharist, but also including praying together in Morning and Evening Prayer, in our Meditation group, and in so many other, diverse ways. Even while our music program is renowned, we appreciate the power of silence, and other similar contrasts in worship styles and approaches.

chimes out a welcome to the community

Consequently centered in God, we participate in a wide range of resulting ministries, ranging from our Soup Hour serving dozens of hungry people a day to our many education and arts programs to our full calendar of fellowship events.

We see ourselves of the world even as we seek to transform it through Christ's love for us all. Therefore we are very active in our immediate community, and inceasingly so even internationally in reaching out to help others.

We invite you to try St. Matthias in any of the activities of the parish, be it praying on Sunday morning or serving lunch to the hungry on Monday afternoon or being with the Book Group on Wednesday evening. There are many ways to be a Christian, and we welcome you to try the many ways offered at St. Matthias.

Who was St. Matthias?

“--one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.” So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias, Then they prayed and said, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.                                      Acts 1:22b-26
